Perimenopause is the transition of hormones and symptoms prior to menopause. It usually encompasses the 5-10 years prior to the onset of menopause (which is defined as the day you have been without a period for a full year). A lot of women have some very disconcerting symptoms during this time, that they sometimes don't realize are related to their transition. You can take a Hormone Quiz below. In my practice, I use more specific questionnaires, as well as lab testing, to hone in on your primary issue.
HRT is now more specifically called MHT, Menopausal Hormone Therapy. Many women benefit from hormonal treatment for this transition as well as after menopause begins. The science and research findings have changed a lot since I began practicing medicine in the 90's.
Bioidentical hormones are available through FDA approved pharmaceutical companies as well as through a trusted compounding pharmacy. The benefit of compounding (and a good compounding pharmacist) is that the dosage can be tailored to your individual needs. Sometimes they can get you the hormones at a better price than what insurance can do (or won't do). I work with compounding pharmacies and work with a trusted pharmacy in the Reno area, but I also prescribe FDA approved pharmaceuticals.
Lab testing can be helpful, depending on where you are in your menopause journey. I typically do salivary testing as I can also get a good sense of your free hormones and your cortisol levels throughout the day (which can dramatically affect symptoms). I have an e-guide coming out on hormone testing. You can click below to get on the email list for the e-book.
